Things your children will never understand:

  • You owned roller skates with keys.

  • You played Hit The Penny, Stoop Ball, Skellsie, King/Queen, Johnny Ride the Pony, Mum Freeze, Box Ball, Ring-a-Levio, Punch Ball, Triangle and "I declare War on...."

  • You owned a pair of shoes from Miles, National's or Thom McCann's.

  • You played hide and go seek at dusk.

  • There was at least one pizzeria within 1 block of your house and a candy store on the corner.

  • You waited for the Good Humor, Mr. Softie or Bungalow Bar guy to come around your block.

  • You went to Saturday matinees all the time.

  • You know the difference between going with, seeing, making out with, fooling around with and going out with someone.

  • You went to Friday night dances at a local Catholic school and the clergy would come by and say "make room for the Holy Ghost."

  • You know what a "johnny pump" is.

  • You made a scooter from orange crates and an old skate.

  • You never realized you had an accent until you left Brooklyn.

  • You know what a "Spauldeen" is.

  • You know what an "El" is.

  • Your friends came over to hang out on the stoop.

  • You've had a pigeon dirty your car and/or your head.

  • You played stickball in the school yard.

  • You roller-skated and bicycled in and around the traffic.

  • You had a "cellar" not a basement.

  • Everybody knows someone from the neighborhood - even if it is your mother's cousin's son-in-law's sister's boyfriend.
